    - when there is a thick layer of snow on the hills.

Amateur skiing is pretty popular with tourists visiting Solang Valley. There are plenty of vendors in Solang valley who provide pair of shoes, gloves and snow suit for around Rs.200. These are not professional grade but for mainly for tourists out to have good time in the snow and have few snaps clicked. To set your expectations right, Solang valley is not for serious ski enthusiasts unlike Gulmarg slopes or Auli.

Alfred Ford, heir to Mr. Henry Ford, had started an ambitious project to turn Manali into an International Ski destination. However, the project, under the name of "Himalayan Ski Village", is mired in controversy and has failed to take off. Local residents opposed many of the clauses that were entered between Himalayan Ski Village and Government.
