Life at Shimla revolves around the iconic Mall Road and the high ground simply called The Ridge. Shimla Mall Road has to be the most scenic and fashionable high street of India. The Mall is pedestrian only and is closed to vehicular traffic. Visitors have to park their cars below on the cart road and use the lift (just another elevator run by HPTDC) to reach the Mall Road.
Staying in a hotel close to the Lift or on the central part of the Mall Road lets you to explore Ridge, Lakkar Bazaar and the Mall. If you stay far from the Mall Road, you will be missing most of the fun.

From Shimla railway station, you need to take a taxi to Tourist Lift or circular road which is on the Southern side of the Mall Road. If your hotel is on the Mall Road and not close to the lift, you will have to hire a porter to carry your luggage. From the station, you can board any waiting taxi or call one by contacting Shimla taxi operator.
